E-DAYS!

The Hypnotist

As the year begins to wrap up, nothing is more exciting than the beginning of Engineering Days. Starting as early as Thursday night, the fanfare began with a hypnotist. Showing up to the destination early, my friends and I grabbed the best seats near the front. Unfortunately due to the unexpected snow storm, the hypnotist arrived late. However, it did not stop him from putting on a good show. The show started off with the hypnotist asking for volunteers. About twenty people ran up to become hypnotized. It was then that the show began. After a few minutes, half the kids that had volunteered were hypnotized as well as some people in the audience. The next hour was a laugh as each of them thought they were everything from a Chinese comedian to a member of the opposite sex. By the end of the performance, I my sides were in pain because I had laughed so much. As I left, I could only speculate about what was next to come.

Fireworks

The next event that week was the fireworks show which was hosted and planned by the students. Since Mines is an engineering school, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I arrived at the Mines football stadium, I was surprised to see people in every seat as well as standing in the corners of the stands. Somehow we managed to find seats at the very top of the bleachers. Before long the show began with a few smaller fireworks, but eventually the whole sky was filled with light and heat as fire spewed from the field.    The last ten minutes ended with a series of fireworks being fired in a row which lighted up the sky and was accompanied by a loud explosion. Walking back to the dorms, I was surprised I could hear anything at all.

Concert

The third day of Edays was great with a concert. In the school’s gymnasium, the Flobots band played. With a new style of music and an electric violinist, the music style was definitely unique. Attending the concert in a large group was one of the best choices I made as we were able to rock out to the music. My favorite song was “Handlebars.” While the type of music played wasn’t necessarily my favorite, I definitely enjoyed the show and my fellow students. As with the fireworks the night before, I started to notice that my hearing was starting to go, but the concert was definitely worth it.

Comedians

On the last and final night of E-Days, the comedians came to our school. The first performers were a comedy duo with a somewhat different style of comedy. Instead of telling jokes, they told stories in the form of poetry. The piece that made an impression on me was about their lives in grade school and how bad their teacher was.   The second comedian had previously performed at Mines. Truthfully, I enjoy the second comedian more; however the first group was entertaining. The second comedian told jokes about a wide range of material and it was really funny. This concluded the celebration and the last few weeks of school began with finals looming ahead.
