Jess: One Big Holiday

Friday, March 23, 2012

Spring break was rough to bounce back from.  After a week of freedom and sunshine, nothing sounded worse than cold mornings and windowless classrooms.  I’m thankful for the professors that were nice enough to schedule their exams before break rather than after, rescuing the majority of the student body from having to study while on vacation.  After the entire physics I class bombed our last exam, it’s been a relief to look at material that isn’t nearly as tough.  The Calc II exam was harder than usual, due to a high average on the preceding exam. Apparently the math department prefers to swing the test average towards a C and they’re more than willing to bust out ridiculous problems to do it.

Extreme studying in the sub-zero temperatures of Randall (I get cold easy)

Towards the beginning of March a friend of mine flew in from CalPoly for a brief visit.  To make sure that she didn’t take off from one engineering school only to land in the middle of another, we decided to spend most of our time off campus.  This led to us getting up close and personal with the RTD – a very convenient and efficient system, if you ask me…(also free) – which eventually dropped us off at the legendary 16th street mall, home of an array of awesome restaurants and shops (including the Hard Rock, a personal favorite).  Nearby is the Tattered Cover; an amazing bookstore with an incredible amount of fame.  It’s sweet, and I recommend a visit.

Before the exams knocked out the last week before spring break, Intervarsity threw an unforgettable party for the girls on campus.  It’s called soiree and is a yearly tradition here at mines that involves hundreds of students.  The Intervarsity boys organize it, with the help of anyone else that wants to participate.  Soiree is a dinner/show/dance for Mines girls(with a few exceptions) that gives us girls a chance to doll up, and gives the boys a chance to show us a wonderful time(they have fun, too –I promise).

A ticket to the event of the year

Golden is finally warming up.  I’ll admit going to school here has gotten me hooked on the forecast.  Colorado is notoriously volatile when it comes to weather.  One minute it will be sunny and warm, and the next you’ll be trapped in a blizzard in a t-shirt and flats. We are beginning to see consecutive days without snow, and everyone is beginning to take their studying antics outside to the park by the Trads or on Kafadar.  The slack-liners are back in the trees, and Ultimate games are popping up everywhere.  I didn’t realize how mellow campus had gotten until the spring showed up to revive everyone.  Now it’s beautiful outside and we’re honing in on summer.
