Tuesday, March 27, 2012Hello again reader and future Miner! I hope you had a good Spring Break, as I certainly did. Unlike most students here I didn’t travel, home or otherwise. I decided to stay in Golden and just have a nice break from midterms before I have to go back to the grind of exams with an upcoming Principles of Economics exam. While it was mostly watching Parks and Recreation (a show I highly recommend) there was also a bit of adventuring into nearby Boulder to have a look around a rather nice town I don’t get a chance to see very often, fortunately it is only a short bus ride away using the RTD system you will have already paid into with your student fees. I also did a bit of shopping at both the rather close by Colorado Mills mall as well as the local Safeway due to the fact that food services is unavailable during breaks which is rather unfortunate due to me living in the Traditional dorms as opposed to Weaver Towers, Maple Hall, or at Mines Park where I would have access to a kitchen to prepare meals. However, I did have a small amount of food thanks to winning a gift basket full of organic and sustainably grown food at our Wellness Fair.

A shot of the Wellness Fair
The Wellness Fair is a fantastic time if you don’t have classes during the fair. There were quite a few local health facilities and stores handing out free food samples, free massages, and healthcare products. I would have some prewritten stuff on it, had I been working for our school paper, The Oredigger, at the time, but this came afterwards. I am now in the employ of The Oredigger as a writer. The job pays fairly well and it is pretty great to be paid to report on seminars and events I would have attended anyway. I’ve mostly been writing about seminars for the various departments on campus lately, but I also was taking pictures for the recent ASCSM election debate (which I will admit, is not an event I would attend normally, however there were free sandwiches and sodas). As one can imagine, it was a fairly dull event that somehow got me less excited about student government than I was to begin with. As one candidate pointed out, many students here don’t find it relevant to them, I being one of them. If you were in a student government in high school, you may find more meaning in it than I do, than it would be good to run, based on the turnout to the debate, it is fairly easy to get in with a high chance of doing so unopposed.

During Spring Break I also got bored enough to make myself some furniture
I wish you have a wonderful set of last weeks before high school ends, both in terms of academic success as well as a time to cherish your friends, particularly if you are an out of state student. I leave you with a bit of advice I was forced to learn today: Between the building for chemistry & geochemistry and the building for metallurgy there is a road. This road is a foot below the sidewalk next to it. If you ignore this fact, especially while having your hands occupied, you will probably twist and sprain your ankle. Also, this is on the opposite end of campus from the clinic.
