Ramiro: What a Month
What a month! My first round of exams (and my first field trip for Earth Science as you can see in the picture) came in-between this blog post and the last. I didn’t do as well as I thought I would. One of the things to get used to from high school is actually studying. Still we get back on the horse after we fall off! The work load here at Mines is heavy, but manageable with good study skills which I’m developing and people here are more than happy to help you with that as well as the work itself. That’s the beautiful thing about a school as hard as Mines, people here understand how hard it is and are always willing to help, students and faculty.
On that note, the career center is also open to helping those in need of career, resume, and internship advice. I’ve attended many information sessions hosted by companies I have an interest in getting an internship from and maybe work for in the future. They are great opportunities to meet engineers from these companies in a more intimate setting than the career fair, which is also a fantastic experience for the career minded (and if you’re reading this than that should certainly apply to you). Coming to information sessions has also given me some valuable information about what to put on a resume to help get an interview for an internship next year.
Mines, however, is not all work in the name of finding work. It can be a pretty fun place! It pretty much has to be. With all the work there is, people need some way to unwind. There are many opportunities for recreation. You can work out or play sports at the recreation center, hike up to Table Mountain to watch the sunset, or rent some equipment and go tubing or canoeing down Clear Creek nearby. Myself, I enjoy playing Magic: The Gathering, a trading card game. I enjoy playing with my friends, which I can do since there’s a club for it here! There is also the Urban Gaming Club if you’re a fan of shooting people with Nerf guns. There are also weekly movies, comedians, and assorted activities planned out by the clubs here at Mines! Just last week, the Residence Hall Association put on a video game tournament and raffle for their new Weekends At Mines program!
