Admissions
Requirements for International Students
There are
two options for applying to graduate programs. You may complete
an online application or a paper
copy (PDF). Both forms of the application require additional
supporting materials that need to be mailed to the Graduate School.
These include:
- Two
official sets of transcripts from all previous colleges (translated
into English)
- Three
letters of recommendation (*PDF file)
- GRE
test scores (Institution code: 4073)
Most graduate degree programs at Mines require completion of a standardize test as part of the
admissions process. The most commonly used standardized test is the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE).
We accept GRE scores from tests taken within the past five years.
After five years, ETS will no longer send scores. We will accept
a copy of the original score report if you have it, however the
department may request that you retake the test once your application
has gone to review.
- GMAT
test scores
The division of Economics and Business also accepts scores from the Graduate Management
Admission Test (GMAT) in place of GRE scores.
Check the academic program pages to determine if the program you are applying to requires
the GRE or GMAT. Students applying to the Physics (MS or PhD) program
and applying for financial aid must submit general and Physics
subject test scores. If you are not applying for aid within the
Physics department, you are only required to submit general GRE
scores.)
- Statement
of goals
The purpose of the statement of goals is to introduce yourself
to the Graduate Admissions Review Committee. In the Statement,
you should address professional and personal goals, as well as
why Colorado School of Mines would be the best place to achieve
those goals. It is typically about one page in length.
-
Resume
- TOEFL
or IELTS
scores (Institution Code: 4073)
Students whose native language is not English must submit
acceptable TOEFL scores as part of the application process. CSM
requires a minimum score of 550 paper-based test or 213 computer-based
test or 79 internet-based test with minimum section scores as
shown below. Tests must have been taken within the past two years
to be accepted. The Graduate Office will accept a copy of your
original score report if older than two years, however, the department
may request that you retake the test once your application has
gone on to review. If you have completed a university degree program
in the United States or at an English speaking university, you
do NOT have to submit TOEFL scores. We also recommend students
submit TWE scores, however this is not this is not a requirement.
If the TOEFL test is not offered in your country, we will also
accept an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
For your convenience, an INTERLINK Language Center (ESL) is offered
here at CSM. For more information contact INTERLINK
Language Center. Successful completion of the INTERLINK program
may entitle academically qualified students to begin their academic
studies without a TOEFL score.

you will receive another email notifying you of any missing credentials
or paperwork that is holding up your application from being reviewed.
