Engineering and Technology Management (M.S.)

The Engineering and Technology Management Program (ETM) offers a practical alternative to the traditional MBA by emphasizing the fundamental principles of (1) engineering management–the science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities that have an engineering component; and (2) technology management–the study of alternative strategies for managing global technology development, acquisition and commercialization.

The ETM Program is intended to enable the student to think critically about a wide range of cross-disciplinary issues. The strong managerial aspects of the curriculum provide graduates with a skill set that will enable them to assume leadership roles in industry and government.

Degree Program

The M.S. degree in Engineering and Technology Management (ETM) includes study in one of two areas of specialization:

  • Operations/Engineering Management (O/EM)
  • Leadership and Strategy (L&S)

Operations/Engineering Management

The Operations/Engineering Management specialization emphasizes valuable techniques for managing large engineering and technical projects effectively and efficiently. In addition, special emphasis is given to advanced operations research and optimization techniques applicable to a wide array of business and engineering problems.

The highest salary offer received by a May 2005 graduate was $112,000.

The O/EM specialization offers the following courses: 1) Project Management, 2) Advanced Project Analysis, 3) Simulation, 4) Computational Nonlinear Programming, 5) Linear Programming, 6) Network Models, 7) Decision Analysis, 8) Supply Chain Management, 9) Advanced Computational Optimization, and 10) Production Planning and Productivity.

Leadership and Strategy

The Leadership and Strategy specialization is designed to teach the correct match between organizational strategies and structures to maximize the competitive power of technology.

The L&S specialization offers the following courses: 1) Inventing, Patenting and Licensing, 2) Managing New Product Development, 3) Marketing for Technology-Based Companies, 4) Technology Entrepreneurship, 5) Business, Engineering and Leadership Ethics, and 6) Business Law and Technology.

Degree Requirements

The ETM master's degree requires a total of 36 credit hours and can be pursued as a thesis or non-thesis option. Required core courses for ETM include: 1) Industrial Accounting, 2) Economics and Decision Making, 3) Management of Technology, 4) Operations Research Methods, 5) Corporate Finance, and 6) Engineering and Technology Management Capstone. In addition to the six core courses (18 hours) required of both thesis and non-thesis students, the non-thesis student must complete 12 hours in one of the two areas of specialization and 6 hours of elective courses. Thesis students must complete 6 hours in their chosen area of specialization, 12 hours of research credit and a Master's level thesis under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

All thesis and non-thesis students are required to attend the ETM Program "Executive-in-Residence" seminar series during at least one semester of their attendance at CSM. The "Executive-in-Residence" series features executives from industry who share insight and knowledge with graduate students preparing for positions in industry. This series facilitates active involvement in the ETM program by industry executives through teaching, student advising activities and more. Every fall semester the Executive-in-Residence will present 5-7 one hour seminars on a variety of topics related to leadership and strategy in the engineering and technology sectors.

Combined BS/MS Program

Mines students entering the ETM program as a combined student can double count six credits of 400-level or above coursework towards fulfilling requirements for both their B.S. and M.S. degrees. These credits can be used as electives in the ETM program. Students must formally apply to the combined program prior to completing their B.S. degree. Although the GRE is waived for combined applicants, students must submit three letters of recommendation along with their application.

Admissions/Entrance Requirements

Applicants to the Engineering & Technology Management program must hold the equivalent of a four-year bachelor's degree in engineering or applied science. Prerequisites for the ETM program are: 1) Engineering Economics, and 2) Probability and Statistics. Though students may be accepted without these prerequisites, it is strongly suggested that applicants complete any deficiencies prior to enrolling in graduate course work. In addition to the course prerequisites, applicants must submit scores from either the GRE or GMAT.
