The Graduate School
at Mines is open to graduates from four-year baccalaureate programs
at recognized colleges and universities. Admission to all graduate
programs is competitive, based on an evaluation of undergraduate
performance, test scores and references. Each department has its
own admission criteria, explained in the Academic
Programs section
of this website.
All application materials are submitted to the Office of Graduate
Studies. Once application files are complete, they are forwarded
to the academic department review committee. All applications should
be submitted by the deadlines indicated on this page. Consult with
the academic department if you wish to be considered beyond this
date.

In addition to our Graduate Admissions Application, students must
submit the following:
- Official transcripts (grade reports) from all colleges and universities
you have attended. All transcripts not in English should be submitted
with certified literal English translations.
- Three
letters of recommendation (*PDF file)
- GRE
test scores (Institution code: 4073)
Not all programs require the GRE. Please check the Academic Programs
pages to determine specific requirements.
We accept GRE scores from tests taken within the past five years.
For scores older than five years, we will accept a copy of the
original score report if you have it, however the department may
request that you retake the test once your application has gone
to review.
- Statement
of goals
The purpose of the statement of goals is to introduce yourself
to the Graduate Admissions Review Committee. In the Statement,
you should address professional and personal goals, as well as
your reasons for choosing Colorado School of Mines to achieve
those goals. It is typically about one page in length.
- TOEFL
or IELTS
scores (Institution Code: 4073)
Students whose native language is not English must submit
acceptable TOEFL scores as part of the application process. CSM
requires a minimum score of 550 paper-based test or 213 computer-based
test or 79 internet-based test with minimum section scores as
shown below. Tests must have been taken within the past two years
to be accepted. The Graduate Office will accept a copy of your
original score report if older than two years, however, the department
may request that you retake the test once your application has
gone on to review. If you have completed a university degree program
in the United States or at an English speaking university, you
do NOT have to submit TOEFL scores. We also recommend students
submit TWE scores, however this is not this is not a requirement.
If the TOEFL test is not offered in your country, we will also
accept an IELTS score of at least 6.5. Please note that TOEIC
exam results cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.
For your convenience, an INTERLINK Language Center (ESL) is offered
here at CSM. For more information contact INTERLINK
Language Center. Successful completion of the INTERLINK program
may entitle academically qualified students to begin their academic
studies without a TOEFL score.

- International
Student Financial Statement (*PDF file)
Your application can be reviewed by the department without your
financial statement. However, before enrolling at Mines, non U.S.
citizens must show proof of financial resources to cover the first
year of studies (minimum of US $38,700 or $46,700 if family will
accompany student to the U.S.) If funding for a degree program
is provided by a sponsoring agency, please include a letter from
that agency indicating the amount of support that will be furnished.
If funding is from a personal source, please send a certified
bank statement showing activity in the account for the past six
months. Non U.S. citizens can apply for financial aid. If aid
is awarded you will be notified in your admission letter and/or
in a letter from the department. The financial statement required
then will be only for the amount not covered by the aid award.
All documentation must be original copies and come from the bank
holding the funds or the person or institution supplying the funds.
All documentation is required before the processing of visa paperwork
can begin.

In order to
speed up the admissions review process, copies of test scores
and transcripts will be accepted until official paperwork arrives.
Official scores and transcripts are required for acceptance into
the graduate programs.
