Meet President Paul Johnson
July 1, 2015
Dear new friends and colleagues,
Elyse and I are very excited to be joining the Mines family today. Thank you for the encouraging notes, gifts, and warm welcome. We feel extremely fortunate to have this opportunity and are proudly wearing our new blue and silver apparel today from the morning workout through a celebration dinner with friends tonight.
We plan to arrive in Golden and temporarily move into the president’s residence on campus later this month. In the meantime, I am in contact with senior staff and continue to build my fall calendar. The goals are immersion in the student experience, discussing aspirations and priorities with the campus community, and connecting with alumni and other Mines supporters.
With respect to the first goal, the plan is to shadow our new freshmen during their first-year experience, starting on move-in day and including a CSM101 section this fall. Throughout the semester there will be informal pizza lunches with individuals and organizations and participation in major events. Faculty and staff are invited to join us for the M-Climb the morning of August 24th either by cheering-on new students prior to the climb or participating in the climb itself— BYOR (bring your own rock) optional!
With respect to the second goal, I hope to visit all academic and support units to discuss aspirations, priorities, and strategic plans. There will also be opportunities for informal coffees and lunches and participation in focused working groups. I look forward to meeting many of you at the faculty and staff BBQ mid-day August 24 and at the faculty conference that afternoon (assuming I survive the M-Climb that morning).
With respect to the third goal, we’ll celebrate Alumni Weekend at Homecoming mid-semester and the Foundation is organizing trips to alumni and donor strongholds beginning with a trip to Houston in August. We will be inviting faculty and student participation.
Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you in your efforts, suggestions for groups or people I should meet, or any ideas you have for advancing Mines. You can reach me through the president’s office at email@example.com.
Finally, I’d like to recognize and thank Bill and Karen Scoggins for their nearly decade-long dedication to Mines; Bill’s impact on the campus will be especially visible this year through the grand openings of the Clear Creek Athletics Complex and the Starzer Welcome Center, and the groundbreaking for the new CoorsTek Center.
Thanks again for the warm welcome. I look forward to meeting and working with you to advance our unique and special institution!
