The gold specimen on the left, simply labeled “Gold wires on quartz, Colorado,” entered the Mines Geology Museum when the Colorado legislature transferred custody of the Colorado State Historical Society collection to the museum on Oct. 25, 1965. This specimen was collected by ex-governor of Colorado, John C. Vivian, who served from 1943-1947.

During a visit to the museum, a cousin of the ex-governor (with the same exact name) felt this specimen was unflattering and promised to donate a far nicer piece.

In June of 2008, the cousin donated the specimen featured at the right, which he found near Breckenridge, Colo.

The matrix on each specimen is approximately the same size and both specimens are currently on display.
