Application Process
What to expect once you apply at Mines
Below are some frequently asked questions regarding the application process for all positions at Mines.
Q: What is the typical timeline for a hiring process (including reviewing applications and contacting candidates)?
The timeline for the recruitment process varies depending on the department or unit you are applying to. Factors that influence the timeline include the size of the search committee, the time of year, and the volume of applications received. For example, scheduling interviews may be challenging during the summer when committee members are on vacation. Additionally, the workload of the HR representatives responsible for reviewing the applications can affect the process. The instructions in the “how to apply” section of the posting will often list the date when review will begin.
Q: Will I receive a confirmation email or any notification to confirm that my resume has been received?
Mines uses Workday as our applicant tracking system (ATS). Please visit jobs.mines.edu to access the portal and check the status of your application. Through this system, you can verify if your materials have been received and track the progress of your application. Additionally, applicants will receive a confirmation email upon receipt of their resume.
Q: How will I be contacted if I am selected for an interview?
This depends on the search, but typically applicants will be contacted via email and text, if you signed up to receive texts. A recruiter will typically follow up with a phone call to be sure you saw the invitation. It is recommended to check your email often, including checking your spam folder periodically. The ATS system through which you submitted your application will provide updates on the status of your application. If you notice a change to a “schedule interview” status without receiving corresponding communication, we suggest reaching out to recruitment@mines.edu for further clarification.
Q: Is it appropriate for me to follow up on the status of my application, and if so, who should I contact?
Yes, we welcome communication! Use this as an opportunity to show your enthusiasm for the position – be succinct with your question. If there is a recruiter listed on the posting, you can contact that person directly. If there isn’t a person listed on the posting for questions, contact us at recruitment@mines.edu.
Q: Will there be any additional steps or assessments in the hiring process?
Often, additional steps and assessments will be listed in the posting details. Another way you may be informed of this is when you are notified of an interview. Some examples may be a physical test or a presentation to a specific group.
It is typical at Mines to have a first-round interview with the search committee or hiring manager, followed by a second-round interview with additional stakeholders. In the case of Academic Faculty searches, a third-round interview with key members in Mines Administration is also conducted.
Q: Does Mines require a background check?
Yes, once you accept an employment offer, a background check is required. You will be sent an email from our background check provider, Orange Tree. Depending on the position, the background check may include a verification of employment and education, criminal history, drug screening, and a physical and dynamic lift assessment. Once you submit your information it may take 7-21 days for the process to complete. Be sure to check your emails after submitting the information as the vendor often will request additional information from you.
Q: I am applying for a Classified position in the State of Colorado Personnel System. What is different about that process?
For information about Classified positions, please visit the State of Colorado’s Department of Personnel and Administration website to learn more.
Q: When will Mines check my references?
The search committee may reach out to the finalist and request professional references.
