Fleet Services

Colorado School of Mines Fleet Services assists campus personnel in performing daily operations with the help of campus vehicles.

How do I start driving a campus vehicle?

  1. Contact your Department Vehicle Coordinator. The DVC will need to assist you in filling out the Vehicle Operator Approval Request Form. If you are unsure as to who your DVC is, please contact Fleet Services directly.
  2. Fill out the online Vehicle Operator Approval Request Form. This form will be immediately submitted to Fleet Services for review. Your DVC will receive a copy of this initial request. They must reply to that email acknowledging that you will be driving university vehicles
  3. Watch your Mines email account for instructions from Orange Tree. It is your responsibility to follow those instructions and submit the requested information. Without completion of every step, the request will not be processed.
  4. Wait for approval notification. Fleet services will email you and your DVC to inform you when and if you have been approved to drive campus vehicles. Once this approval has been sent, you can begin driving campus vehicles.

Please keep in mind that background checks are required periodically. Fleet Services will remind and assist you when it is time to submit additional background check requests.

How do I become a department vehicle coordinator?

Applicants wishing to become a department vehicle coordinator (DVC) should fill out the. Department Vehicle Coordinator Designation Form. The form will be reviewed by Fleet Services and applicants will be contacted regarding their finalized designation.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If my vehicle becomes disabled, how can I prevent getting a ticket?

    • Call Parking Services at 303-273-3100 or email parking@mines.edu and describe the problem. Explain when you will be able to resolve it and be sure to leave a contact number so we can reach you

If I become temporarily handicapped, will parking services provide a permit to park in HC spaces?

    • If access to a disabled parking space is needed, contact your local DMV office to obtain a disability parking placard.  Any valid Mines parking permit allows access to disabled parking spaces. A disabled placard must also be displayed.

Can I use my permit for more than one vehicle?

    • Yes, campus permits can be used on up to three vehicles. However, only one vehicle can be on campus at one time.

Can I leave my car parked overnight on campus?

    • Parking overnight on campus is not permitted except for resident students. Contact Parking Services for specific information before leaving your vehicle on campus overnight.

    What about Christmas Break?

    • For safety purposes and ease of snow removal, Public Safety and Parking Services request vehicles left on campus park in Lot AA during Christmas break; this includes residents of Mines Park

What if I am driving a rental vehicle?

    • If you will be driving a rental vehicle you can still utilize your campus permit. To do so, add the rental vehicle to your account online or contact Parking Services for assistance.

    Where can my guests park?

    • During enforcement hours, guests are required to have a valid annual or daily Mines parking permit when parked on campus and in Mines Park.  Mines Park residents should contact Parking Services with the license plate number, vehicle description, and duration of stay of their guests. Refer to the Visitor page for more information.

Where can I park on campus if I don’t have a permit?

    • You will need to park in a daily/hourly permitted spot. All campus streets and parking lots require a valid campus parking permit, including Mines Park. Daily/hourly permits may be purchased at meters or via a mobile app. Look for signage located in parking lots for instructions. Parking without a permit or meter receipt will result in a parking citation.

Will I be able to change from my current permit type to another permit type during the year?

    • Some permits sell out very early and might not be available. Contact Parking Services when you wish to change permit types.

If I get a ticket while driving my friend’s car, who will get charged?

    • Parking tickets are charged to the permit holder or the registered owner. A moving violation on campus will be charged to the violator.

When leaving for the summer, may I leave my car at my Mines Park residence while I’m gone?

    • Vehicles not moving within a 2-week period can be considered abandoned. Residents leaving their vehicles for long periods of time should contact Parking Services.

Non-residents may not leave their vehicle on campus overnight without permission from Parking Services.

I have a small scooter that I drive to campus. Can I park it in the bicycle racks?

    • ALL scooters, mopeds and motorcycles must have a parking permit while parked on campus. EXCEPTIONS: electric mopeds and those under 50cc may park in bicycle racks. Gas-powered motorcycles and scooters must be parked away from buildings, just as vehicles, and may also park in the white cross-hatched areas at the end of parking rows, except when next to a disabled space.

If I disagree with the outcome of my appeal, who can overturn the referee decision?

    • All appeal decisions are final and binding upon both the appellant and Parking Services. Appeals may NOT be petitioned further.

    City of Golden Parking Plan

Beginning January 1, 2017, the City of Golden started implementing a new Parking Management Plan.

The changes will consist of new parking zones that will either be 2-hour time limits, permitted, or paid parking. This means there will no longer be long-term free parking in the downtown area, which includes the city streets surrounding the campus.

Please visit these maps to familiarize yourself with the new plan.

    Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Parking Services encourages the use of fuel-efficient vehicles on the Mines’ campus. Mines has received grant money from the Regional Air Quality Council and installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on campus. These charging stations can be found in Lots CT, F, MB, McNeil Garage and at 1750 Jackson Street. Electric vehicles may only use authorized charging stations.

Use of the electricity is subject to a fee. Also, those who use the charging stations must have a campus permit. Visitors will need to purchase a daily/hourly permit. There is a 4‐hour time limit at each station. It is a violation to be parked at an EV charging station without actively charging a hybrid/electric vehicle.
