BENJAMIN WAGLEY

PhD Program, Computer Science

Ben WagleyWith the rise of Large Language Models pushing the boundaries of AI systems, I would like to explore how LLMs can impact and improve education in complex fields such as Quantum Engineering. By building LLM-backed educational assistants, I hope to not only improve and provide personalized education, but also to help explore positive use-cases for AI in Quantum Engineering. While my background lies more in Mathematics and Computer Science, I believe collaboration and cross-disciplinary research is vital to furthering all fields, and I am excited to focus more on the challenges afforded in Quantum Engineering.

Outside of my studies, I encourage my creativity with my camera, and in the kitchen exploring the world’s cuisines, and creating new dishes.  I also love music and enjoy designing and building speakers.  I am often also working on my cars, as I enjoy older vehicles and the maintenance they require. In the winter I love to take advantage of the wonderful snow in the mountains of Colorado and can often be found snowboarding.

Education

BS, Engineering Physics, Colorado School of Mines, 2021

Research Interests

  • Super-resolution molecular imaging
  • Transport and optical modelling
  • Nanomaterial engineering

Current Project

Creation of a large language model (LLM) backed, agent-based, virtual lab assistant. It will ingest equipment documentation, lab manager’s instructions, reference manuals, and other lab materials to provide a chat interface for students working in lab environments to easily ask questions about lab procedures.

Mentors

Bo Wu, Mines Computer Science
Meenakshi Singh, Mines Physics
Mehmet Belviranli, Mines Computer Science
