Detecting and Mitigating Methane Emissions to Slow Climate Change

Project Goals and Description:
Methane is the most important greenhouse gas on decadal scales. Reducing methane emissions in the near future is hence critical for curbing climate change and its destructive effects. Reducing methane emissions from oil and gas production facilities turns out to be a particular promising avenue in part due to the rapid development in various emission monitoring technology ranging from satellites to small ground-based sensors. In our research group, we develop statistical modeling and data analytics frameworks to gain insights from the data obtained from the monitoring technologies with the primary goals of accurate accounting and rapid detection of methane emissions. Detecting methane emissions quickly allows for them to be eliminated rather than acting us a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.
