Project Info
Virtual Reality for Autonomous Vehicle Interaction Design
Thomas Williams | twilliams@Mines.edu
Virtual Reality presents new opportunities to explore the ways in which autonomous vehicles (such as autonomous cars or autonomous wheelchairs) may interact with their users, without the need for physical robots. In this project, students will develop virtual environments for exploring such interactions, and design an experiment to test different robot behaviors within that environment.

Grand Engineering Challenge: Enhance virtual reality
Student Preparation
Qualifications
Preferred prerequisites: prior experience with 3D game design or virtual reality.
Required prerequisites: strong programming skills in java and/or c++.
Time Commitment
40 hours/month
Skills/Techniques Gained
The student will gain experience working with virtual reality technologies, knowledge of issues in assistive technologies and human-robot interaction, and gain skills related to experimental design.
Mentoring Plan
On a weekly basis, the student will meet with Dr. Williams and/or other students working on complementary projects. Dr. Williams will shepherd the project towards publication and give the student opportunities to present their work in lab meetings and at campus-wide events.
